Planting: Mid-October to mid-November
Marketing: February to May
Harvesting and curing: Leaves
harvested individually in groups of 2 or more leaves at a
time at about weekly intervals. Cured under strictly controlled
temperature and humidity regimes to ensure that chemical changes
proceed to the desired point but no further. Practically all
starch changed to sugar. 6-8 day curing time. Cured leaf is
bright lemon, orange or mahogany.
Environment: Warm, relatively
humid environment without extended periods of moisture stress
to ensure rapid, uninterrupted growth and ripening. Relatively
infertile, light soils which will produce a good yield but,
at the same time, ensure the desired balance between the main
chemical compounds, especially carbohydrates and those containing
nitrogen, and their amounts (hence the high sugar content
of this type).
